\b0 Joan Mir≤ was born at Montroig in 1893. He attended the art school in \b \cf4 \ATXht128 Barcelona\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 and moved to Paris around 1919. \b \cf4 \ATXht86 Picasso\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 introduced him to the intellectual and avant-garde circles of the capital. In 1924, he became a surrealist through the influence of his friend AndrΘ
Masson and took part in all the activities and manifestos of this movement.\par
In 1930,he began to move beyond painting, with his first \i papiers collΘs\i0 , insertions of materials, and \i Constructions\i0 . During these years, Pierre Matisse put hi
m in contact with the Valentine Gallery in New York and Mir≤ began to earn a name for himself in the United States. He received numerous commissions in America, some of them on a monumental scale. One of his best periods began in 1939 with the series kno
wn as \i Constellations\i0 . In those same years, he returned to Spain, settling in Palma de Mallorca. In 1944, he started to produce ceramics as well, an activity to which he devoted increasing attention over the following years. He died in Palma de Mal
lorca in 1983.\par
